SIE at a glance
Who needs the SIE
Who takes it: college students, career changers and new hires who want to show a firm they are serious before being hired. Passing the SIE alone does not let you do securities business; FINRA is explicit that it does not qualify you for registration. You still need a “top-off” representative exam (most commonly the Series 7 or Series 6) taken through a sponsoring firm.
What it covers: industry vocabulary, how capital markets work, the main product types and their risks, trading and account basics, and the regulators and rules that sit on top of all of it. The math is light compared with the Series 7.

How to register and schedule
- Self-enroll on FINRA.org
Create a FINRA account and enroll in the SIE yourself (or your firm enrolls you through CRD, or you use a voucher). No sponsor required.
- Pay the $100 fee
Paid at enrollment. The fee rose from $80 to $100; confirm on FINRA’s SIE page before paying.
- Schedule with Prometric within 120 days
FINRA opens a 120-day window. The SIE can be taken at a Prometric test center or online with remote proctoring.
- Sit the exam
80 questions total (75 scored + 5 unscored pretest items you cannot identify), 1 hour 45 minutes.
- Use the pass within four years
Your SIE is valid for four years. Pair it with a top-off exam once a firm sponsors you.
Current FINRA rule: wait 30 days after a first or second failed attempt, and 180 days after three failures in a row. Coming change: FINRA filed SR-FINRA-2026-014 (June 29, 2026) to cut those waits to 15 days and 60 days; FINRA says the new periods take effect on a date it will announce in a future Regulatory Notice. As of 2026-09-23 we found no implementation notice, so plan on 30/180.
Where it fits in the licensing path
The SIE is step one of every FINRA representative path. The two most common sequences are SIE -> Series 7 -> Series 63 (broker) and SIE -> Series 7 -> Series 66 (broker plus fee-based advice). See what order to take FINRA exams.

Frequently asked questions
What is the SIE exam?
A FINRA exam that tests basic securities industry knowledge: markets, products, trading, accounts and regulation. It is a co-requisite for most FINRA representative registrations, including the Series 6 and Series 7.
Do I need a sponsor to take the SIE?
No. FINRA lets anyone 18 or older take the SIE without being associated with a firm. You do need a sponsor for the Series 6 and Series 7 that follow it.
How much does the SIE cost?
The FINRA fee is $100 (verified 2026-09-23 on FINRA’s SIE page). It was previously $80.
What score do you need to pass the SIE?
A scaled score of 70. FINRA equates scores across exam forms, so 70 is not the same as “70% correct.”
How long is the SIE valid?
Four years from the date you pass. If you have not registered with a firm on a top-off exam by then, you retake it.
Does the SIE license let me sell securities?
No. The SIE is not a license on its own. You must also pass a representative exam such as the Series 7 and be registered by a FINRA member firm.
Can I take the SIE online?
Yes. FINRA offers online delivery of the SIE to any candidate with an open enrollment window, through Prometric’s remote-proctoring system.
